OSCARS, Fish that THINK! • Scientific name: "Astronotus ocellatus"

Sampson & Rutherford
We got our Oscars about two years ago. They were each the size of a quarter. Now, two years later, they are 12 - 13 inches in length. We finally put them in a 65 gallon tank. They will spend the next 10+ years in their new home. They are beautiful--with their graceful, fan-shaped, translucent fins, gorgeous shades of amber, yellow, green and black. Sampson & Rutherford are true Oscars with their voracious appetites, their playful fights and their curiosity of life itself. As we sit at our computers and work, the two grumpy old men will each take a heaping mouthful of gravel, swim to the top and spit it out against the glass to either pass time, get our undivided attention or to express their hunger. They savor goldfish, turkey, filet mignon, and pellets--their staple. When we are in the office, Sampson & Rutherford put on quite the show---from full-fledged battles of minute-long liplock to playful shoves using their tails and mouths. They love to watch us, their inquisitive eyes following our every move. We chat with them and they come closer to the glass. It's almost as if they are listening to us, holding on to every word we say. We smile at them, they smile back with their sage, grumpy expressions.
